There are now many companies that will gladly use your roof to produce an income for themselves if you let them. They will get the £1000 per year tax free income, you get some free electricity during the daylight hours. Nobody does this if they are fully informed.

You can take the £1000 a year yourself. Even if you have to borrow the money it is a loan secured on your home that is paid for out of the annual income leaving most of the income for you.

The free electricity produced is only during daylight and is heavily biased towards summer. If you are not home to take advantage of the free power there is no gain for you. At best the free electricity will reduce your power bill by £200, more normally this is about £100 per annum. Some of these companies even charge and admin or survey charge to see if your home is suitable or process your application.

You need to permit access to your home every year for system checks and be home quickly to allow entry should the system stop for any reason. Your home now comes with the legal equivalent of a sitting tenant when you come to sell it. Solicitors costs are significantly increased. Your home buyer may not want to permit the required access.
If you or your home’s new owner decide to have the solar panels removed within the term of the contract there are termination penalties.

It is far safer and more cost-effective to just pay for the solar panels yourself and take all the profits yourself.
